Rome Apartment

Siglinda on Rome:

"Fellini used to say that, 'Roma is an opulent prostitute: Colorful, arrogant, thoughtless, generous, and able to laugh at all human miseries.' I agree to some extent. To get to know Roma you have to breathe the Roman summer sunsets and nights, but I believe that nobody ever described and talked of Roma with more passion and understanding than Pier Paolo Pasolini. In fact, I strongly suggest if you haven't done it yet that you would read at least one of his books. My favorites are Una Vita Violenta (A Violent Life) and Ragazzi Di VIta (The Ragazzi).

I love the Tiber Island, Trastevere, and Borgo Pio (the old part of the city near the Vatican), The flea market, Porta Portese, is open on Sundays from 6 am to 2 pm. Campo de Fiori is one of the finest open food markets in the city. I adore to have a cappuccino and cornetto in one of the cafes by the market and then buy fresh bread, fish, mozzarella, prosciutto, fruit and vegetable, go home and cook a great meal, set the table in the garden, with good music and a bottle of cool Frascati wine.

If you are up for a real treat go to 'L'Antica Pesa' in Via Garibaldi near Trastevere. It is the restaurant of the Italian Government Mafia. (Not to worry, they are only dangerous to our people and our country and they always manage to get elected....What is new?!) The food is suberb and the walls are decorated by many of the best Italian painters, they also have a good collection of sculptures. The name of the owner is Pietro, a real street kid. Roma is one of the most fascinating cities in the world. Just outside of the city, Ostia Antica, Pompeii, and all the Etruscan towns and museums are a must.Having Roma as a home base, (in a comfortable apartment where you can rest, can make your vacation a real success,) you could visit the Mediterranean shore of Italy, starting from the Sperlonga, a beautifully preserved small town on the coast of north Napoli, and then, south of Napoli all the way to the tip of the boot the old architectural vernacular of the white villages is unique.

The village of Capri on the Island of Capri and everywhere along the Amalfi coast. All the villages are white, clean, of extraordinary beauty."
